The Story is True Any way you look at it, the deck was stacked against Charley. On July 2, 1874, Charley was accused of murdering George Crandall. Charley was from the only family in that country neighborhood who were not related to the others. Charley admitted striking George twice in self defense, but that did not explain the eleven ghastly gashes that penetrated George’s head. Several conflicts of interests are apparent. The investigating officer was the cousin of the victim. Charley’s defense attorney was also found to be representing the estate of the deceased man. Eyewitness accounts were conflicting. The widow acted in a bizarre manner and changed her story every time she told it. Since she was the first person on the scene, one has to wonder why the district attorney didn’t call her to the stand. Did the jury find the truth? Read the story and decide for yourself. |
